Local Domino’s manager is crowned the UK & Irelands Fastest Pizza Maker
21 February 2024Local Domino’s Store Manager Abbie Thompson has been crowned Domino’s UK and Ireland Fastest Pizza Maker, becoming the second female winner in the history of the competition.
Abbie, who is the Store Manager of the Hamilton store in Scotland, took part in the competition for the first time this year and has beaten over 327 competitors from across the UK and Ireland. Abbie won with an impressive time of 1 minute 12 seconds with zero penalties. The Fastest Pizza Maker Competition started in 1982 and every year since Domino's sees the upper crusts of the world’s pizza makers put their skills to the test.
This year’s competition consisted of 11 heats across 5 countries, 327 competitors from 34 franchise groups, 25 finalists and one new UK champion. Contestants are judged on their ability to hand make three large pizzas, but it's not just about speed – quality and precision are key. Contestants make three pizzas topped with 30 slices of pepperoni, 59g of mushrooms, 231g of diced mozzarella and the Domino’s signature tomato pizza sauce.
The judges also have very strict rules on the quality of the pizza. If a pepperoni slice is in the wrong place, or the fresh dough has not been stretched to the right size, contestants are penalised by 15 seconds per error; demonstrating it’s not easy to win this coveted title!
Abbie Thompson, Fastest Pizza Maker at Domino’s commented: “I’m thrilled to have won the fastest pizza maker competition. I have worked for Domino’s for seven years, and this one of my proudest moments. Joana Mendes, last year’s winner, really inspired me as the first female champion. I’m so happy to have made my Domino’s team proud, and to come home with the award is just fantastic.”
Abbie has successfully qualified to take part in the world championships in Las Vegas in May. She’ll be joined by three other members of the UK team, including current World Champion, Zagros Jaff, along with winners from other European countries.
